Grown and distilled in Queensland

A eucalyptus that smells of lemon, because it has almost no eucalyptus in it.

Lemon Ironbark Essential Oil 10mL

Lemon Ironbark is distilled from Eucalyptus staigeriana, a Queensland tree named for its deeply furrowed, iron-hard bark. What makes the oil unusual is what it lacks. Most eucalyptus oils are dominated by 1,8-cineole, the sharp camphoraceous note. This one carries citral and limonene instead, and reads as soft, sweet lemon.

What Lemon Ironbark actually is.

Lemon Ironbark is steam distilled from the leaves of Eucalyptus staigeriana, a tree of the Queensland tropical woodlands. Ironbarks take their name from bark that stays on the trunk and hardens into deep, blackened furrows rather than shedding the way most eucalypts do. Zea's is grown on Yidinjdji land in far north Queensland.

Tropical savanna woodland

Eucalyptus staigeriana grows in the open woodland country of far north Queensland, where the year splits hard into a wet season and a dry one. It has a naturally restricted range, which is part of why the oil is far less common than the mass-produced eucalyptus oils.

Step two · harvested

Named for the bark, valued for the leaf

The bark is what gives the tree its name and its character: dense, dark and deeply furrowed, hard enough to blunt tools. The oil, though, is entirely in the leaf. Only leaf material goes to the still.

Step three · distilled

Steam distilled, then tested

Steam lifts the volatile oil out of the leaf and the two are condensed and separated. Every batch is GC/MS tested. For this oil the telling figure is how little 1,8-cineole it contains compared with a standard eucalyptus.

Eucalyptus staigeriana foliage, the source of the citral-rich oil

The eucalyptus that forgot to be a eucalyptus.

Ask someone to describe eucalyptus oil and they will describe 1,8-cineole: sharp, camphoraceous, the smell of a chest rub. Blue Mallee and Blue Gum are bred and selected for exactly that, and their cineole content runs high.

Eucalyptus staigeriana is a genuine eucalypt that went a different way. Its published specification puts limonene at 7 to 32% and citral at 8 to 12%, with the para-cymene and 1,8-cineole group together at only 8 to 12%. The result is complex rather than blunt, with terpinolene and alpha-phellandrene filling out the middle. It is the eucalypt to reach for when you want the freshness without the medicine-cabinet note.

What “100% pure” actually means on this bottle.

Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis. The physical specifications shown are the supplier's published range for this oil; natural oils vary between batches, which is exactly why each one is tested rather than assumed.

Tropical savanna woodland with ranges behind, far north Queensland

Wet season, dry season, and not much in between.

Eucalyptus staigeriana belongs to the tropical woodland of far north Queensland, on Yidinjdji land, where the year swings between a heavy wet and a long dry. Its natural range is narrow, which is the simple reason this oil has never become a commodity the way Blue Mallee and Blue Gum have.

Questions, answered

What is Lemon Ironbark Essential Oil?

A 100% pure essential oil, steam distilled from the leaves of Eucalyptus staigeriana in far north Queensland. It is single origin and GC/MS tested.

What does it smell like?

A soft, sweet lemon aroma with only a light eucalypt note behind it. Much gentler and more complex than a standard eucalyptus oil.

How do I use it?

Start with 3 to 6 drops in a diffuser. For skin, dilute one or two drops in a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond, and patch test first.

Why does it not smell like eucalyptus?

Because it barely contains the compound that makes eucalyptus smell like eucalyptus. Most eucalyptus oils are dominated by 1,8-cineole. In Eucalyptus staigeriana the para-cymene and 1,8-cineole group together sits at only 8 to 12%, with limonene and citral leading instead.

How is it different from Lemon Myrtle?

Lemon Myrtle is 87 to 95% citral and hits you with one very loud note. Lemon Ironbark spreads across limonene, citral, terpinolene and alpha-phellandrene, so it reads softer and more layered.

Can I put it straight on my skin?

No. Never apply an undiluted essential oil and never take one internally. Dilute in a carrier oil first, and patch test.

Is it tested?

Yes. Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis, which is how the specifications on this page are established.

Is it safe around children and pets?

Keep it out of reach of children and never apply it undiluted. Diffuse in a ventilated room rather than a closed space. Check with your vet before diffusing around pets.

How should I store it?

Below 30°C in a dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap on firmly. The lighter constituents are always the first to escape.

How do the pack savings work?

Choose your pack above and the discount applies automatically at checkout. No code needed: 5% off 3 or more, 10% off 5 or more eligible Zea products.
