Cold pressed from Australian fruit

The only citrus in the range with a bitter edge, and that edge is the point.

Grapefruit Essential Oil 10mL

Grapefruit is cold pressed from the rind of Citrus paradisi, grown in Australia. Where orange is sweet and lemon is sharp, grapefruit is tangy with a distinct bitterness underneath. That bitter note is what stops it cloying, and it is why grapefruit works in blends where the sweeter citrus oils become too much.

Grapefruit Essential Oil

What Grapefruit oil actually is.

Grapefruit is cold pressed from the rind of Citrus paradisi, grown in Australia. The species is a natural hybrid of sweet orange and pomelo, which is exactly what it tastes and smells like: the sweetness of one and the bitter backbone of the other. The aroma is tangy yet sweet, and the oil is colourless to yellow.

A hybrid, and a fairly recent one

Citrus paradisi is a cross between sweet orange and pomelo that arose in the Caribbean only a few centuries ago. It is one of the youngest commercial citrus species, and it inherited the pomelo's bitterness alongside the orange's sweetness.

The rind, cold

The oil glands sit in the rind. Cold pressing ruptures them mechanically and separates the oil from juice and water without heat, keeping the aroma close to the fresh fruit.

Nothing added, every batch checked

Nothing is added and nothing is rectified out. The certificate of analysis records appearance, colour, odour, specific gravity and refractive index, along with Australia as both country of origin and country of extraction.

Grapefruit Essential Oil

Why the bitterness matters in a blend.

Sweet citrus oils are easy and they are also easy to overdo. Orange, mandarin and to an extent lime all lean sweet, and a blend built only on those can end up flat and confected.

Grapefruit brings something none of them do: a genuine bitter edge inherited from its pomelo parentage. In perfumery terms that gives a blend lift and tension rather than just brightness, which is why grapefruit pairs so well with the conifer and wood oils. Black Spruce and grapefruit is a far more interesting combination than orange and spruce, and the reason is the bitterness.

Ways to use it

Diffuse it

3 to 6 drops in a diffuser or oil burner. The simplest way in.

Blend it

Grapefruit blends with the pine and conifer oils, particularly Black Spruce, and with Cedarwood.

Diluted on skin

One or two drops in a carrier oil such as jojoba. Patch test first.

On a tissue

One drop inhaled from a tissue when you want the aroma on the move.

Room and linen mist

A few drops in water instead of a synthetic air freshener.

In the bath

Well dispersed in a carrier or with bath salts, never neat on water.

Natural cleaning

A few drops in a homemade surface spray as a fresh deodoriser.

A morning diffuser

3 to 6 drops. Bright and bitter rather than sweet.

Using it safely

Grapefruit is a cold-pressed citrus oil, which brings one restriction the steam-distilled oils do not have.

  • Cold-pressed grapefruit is photosensitising. It can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. Keep skin dilution low and avoid direct sun on treated skin. Diffusing is unaffected.
  • For external use only. Never apply undiluted, and never take it internally.
  • Always dilute in a carrier oil before skin contact, and patch test first.
  • Avoid contact with eyes. Keep out of reach of children.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your health practitioner first.
  • Discontinue use if irritation occurs. Store below 30°C, out of direct sunlight.

Questions, answered

What is Grapefruit Essential Oil?

A 100% pure essential oil, cold pressed from the rind of Citrus paradisi grown in Australia. It is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis.

What does it smell like?

Tangy yet sweet, with a clean bitter edge underneath that the other citrus oils do not have.

How do I use it?

Start with 3 to 6 drops in a diffuser. For skin, dilute one or two drops in a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond, and patch test first.

Why does it smell bitter compared to orange?

Because grapefruit is a hybrid of sweet orange and pomelo, and it inherited the pomelo's bitterness. That edge is what gives a blend lift rather than just sweetness.

Can I use it on skin before going out?

Take care. Cold-pressed citrus oils can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, so keep dilution low and keep treated skin out of direct sun. Diffusing carries no such restriction.

Can I put it straight on my skin?

No. Never apply an undiluted essential oil and never take one internally. Dilute in a carrier oil first, and patch test.

Is it tested?

Yes. Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis, which is how the specifications on this page are established.

Is it safe around children and pets?

Keep it out of reach of children and never apply it undiluted. Diffuse in a ventilated room rather than a closed space. Check with your vet before diffusing around pets.

How should I store it?

Below 30°C in a dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap on firmly. The lighter constituents are always the first to escape.

How do the pack savings work?
